Bike Mechanic / Youth Educator

(Seasonal PT & FT)


Local Motion is looking for a Bike Mechanic / Youth Educator to work with the Bay Area BikeMobile, an innovative program designed to help young people use their bikes more often. 

ABOUT LOCAL MOTION: Local Motion’s mission is to improve the way we move. We teach people how to safely and effectively walk, bike, and take public transit in an effort to create healthier communities.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM: The Bay Area Bikemobile hosts free bicycle repair and education events at schools, parks, and community events across 8 Bay Area counties: San Francisco, Marin, Sonoma, Napa, Solano, Contra Costa, Santa Clara, and San Mateo. To learn more, visit

ABOUT THE POSITION: The Bike Mechanic / Youth Educator repairs bicycles while educating the owner about the repair process. This position is supervised by the Lead Mechanic and Program Director. Transportation to job sites is provided from North Oakland and considered paid time.


  • 6 months experience working with youths, or equivalent
  • 6 months experience repairing bikes in a shop setting, or equivalent
  • Professional, patient, and outgoing personality
  • Physical ability to lift 40 pounds


  • Experience working with diverse populations in the SF Bay Area and sensitivity to the issues faced by low-income communities
  • Proficiency in Spanish and English is highly desired
  • Clean driving record and drivers license

HOURS AND COMPENSATION: Scheduling is flexible. A typical shift is 6-8 hours and can be in the morning or afternoon, Tues-Sun. The pay rate is competitive and DOE. PTO is accrued at 2 weeks per year when working FTE.
